US presses EU for deal on Airbus-Boeing
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States warned the European Union on Wednesday that it would revive a World Trade Organization complaint against European subsidies for airplane maker Airbus (EAD.PA: Quote , Profile , Research ) if the two sides can not reach a negotiated settlement soon. "If we conclude a negotiated solution to end subsidies is not possible in the near term, we will return promptly to the WTO," Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Peter Allgeier said in testimony prepared for an aviation subcommittee in the U.S. House of Representatives. In January, Washington and Brussels set aside a pair of competing WTO cases over government subsidies for Airbus and its American rival Boeing (BA.N: Quote , Profile , Research ) to try to reach a negotiated deal. They failed to do that by an April deadline and the dispute has been on hold since then. Allgeier warned European governments they would face certain U.S. action at the WTO if they provide "launch aid" loans to help Airbus develop a new regional aircraft, the A350, to compete with Boeing's latest project, the 787 Dreamliner. "It is up to the Europeans to decide if they are prepared to withhold launch aid while negotiating an agreement, or if they'd rather take their chances at the WTO," Allgeier said. The United States is concerned that Europe's use of launch aid is "spawning imitators," Allgeier said, referring to Canada's recent decision to help airplane maker Bombardier (BBDsvb.T: Quote , Profile , Research ) underwrite the costs of developing its new "C-Series" aircraft.
