Stocks Seen Down; Amazon Dims Early Mood
NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stock futures pointed to a lower market open on Wednesday, carrying over from Tuesday's weakness, as online retailer Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN.O: Quote , Profile , Research ) dampened the early morning sentiment after posting lower quarterly profit late Tuesday. European industrial conglomerate Siemens (SIEGn.DE: Quote , Profile , Research ) also dulled the mood after operating profit fell short of analysts' estimates, as its mobile phone division posted another dismal result (ID:nFAB007921: Quote , Profile , Research ) . WellPoint Inc. (WLP.N: Quote , Profile , Research ) , which recently merged with Anthem Inc. to become the biggest U.S. health insurer, said quarterly profit rose, beating Wall Street expectations (ID:nN27401692: Quote , Profile , Research ) . Dow Jones industrial average futures (DJM5: Quote , Profile , Research ) were down 21 points, while Nasdaq 100 (NDM5: Quote , Profile , Research ) fell 6.5 points. "We're kind of stuck in a range right now and I think we're seeing a little bit of a carry over from Tuesday. Siemens was not good news," said Oliver Stevens, a senior trader at IG Index. Gambling operator Station Casinos Inc. (STN.N: Quote , Profile , Research ) posted better-than-expected first quarter profit (ID:nN27624579: Quote , Profile , Research ) . Oil prices held around $54 but were under pressure from signs of rising OPEC supplies and assurances by top exporter Saudi Arabia that it could quickly turn on its spare capacity if needed (ID:nSP114054: Quote , Profile , Research ) . U.S. crude inventories are expected to show a rise when the government releases new stockpile data later in the day (EIA/S: Quote , Profile , Research ) . U.S. light crude (CLc1: Quote , Profile , Research ) slipped 6 cents to $54.14 a barrel, extending Tuesday's 37-cent loss. In economic news, durable goods data is due at 8:30 a.m. (1330 GMT), with economists expecting the data to come in up 0.3 percent. U.S. stocks fell on Tuesday as a decline in consumer confidence increased concerns about the economy's strength and companies such as printer maker Lexmark International Inc. (LXK.N: Quote , Profile , Research ) and chemical group DuPont Co. (DD.N: Quote , Profile , Research ) posted disappointing earnings (ID:nN26593993: Quote , Profile , Research ) .
