Exxon Mobil CEO takes home $38 mln

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM.N: Quote , Profile , Research ) Chief Executive Lee Raymond's compensation package jumped to more than $38 million last year, when soaring energy prices helped the No. 1 public oil company report one of the largest profits in U.S. corporate history. Raymond's salary rose slightly to $3.6 million while his bonus rose to $3.9 million. He also received restricted stock awards worth more than $28 million, up from $17.9 million a year earlier. The past year was an exceptionally good one for Exxon, which rode the wave of rising oil and gas prices to post revenue of more than $298 billion and a record profit of $25.33 billion. The company's share price also surged more than 28 percent in the year. Other parts of Raymond's pay package included long-term incentive payouts of $2.2 million, which were down slightly. He also received $216,000 in other compensation that included contributions under retirement plans. Raymond received $179,382 for the cost of club memberships, financial planning services and tax assistance, as well as personal use of the company aircraft and other properties. Oil and gas prices have been on a sharp upward climb over the past year as rising demand from Asian giants like India and China stretches tight global supplies of crude. Exxon also disclosed several shareholder proposals in its proxy filing that it recommended voting against, including one seeking a security report related to Exxon's gas operations in the troubled Aceh region of Indonesia. The proposal calls for a management review and report to shareholders by September on Exxon's arrangements with the Indonesian government and private security forces, including support in cash, to the Indonesian government and military. Exxon said it is deeply troubled and concerned about the violence in the region and has specifically communicated to the Indonesian government its opposition to human rights abuse. But since its position and policies on human rights have been broadly communicated and reports on its activities are available on its Web site, it said it does not believe a separate Aceh security report is needed. Other shareholder proposals included political contributions, changing the structure of board compensation, seeking independent directors for the board and changing the company's equal employment opportunity policy to explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation. A few proposals also sought to address environmental issues like biodiversity, emissions and climate change.
