AIG's Greenberg Steps Down as CEO
NEW YORK (Reuters) - American International Group (AIG.N: Quote , Profile , Research ) on Monday said Maurice "Hank" Greenberg stepped down as chief executive amid an ongoing investigation by New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer into allegations of bid rigging within the insurance industry. The company also said Chief Financial Officer Howard Smith had taken leave and would be replaced by Treasurer Steven Bensinger. AIG said it would delay filing its annual report with regulators because of the management changes as well as an internal review of its accounting for certain transactions. Greenberg, a prominent industry executive long associated with AIG where he started out as a manager in 1960, will remain as a non-executive chairman, AIG said in a statement.
