Nikkei Edges Higher by Midday
TOKYO (Reuters) - Tokyo's Nikkei average edged up 0.25 percent by midsession on Friday, as gains in stocks with good earnings prospects offset falls in some techs such as Tokyo Electron Ltd. Japan Tobacco Inc. (JT) shot up 4.7 percent after the sole producer of tobacco in Japan said one-third of its workforce was seeking early retirement, helping the company save more money in the future. The Nikkei ended the morning session up 29.19 points at 11,611.91, a hair below its 7-1/2-month closing high of 11,646.49 marked on Tuesday. The broader TOPIX index edged up 0.15 percent to 1,163.69, although more stocks fell than rose on the Tokyo bourse's first section.
