Stocks End Lower as Insurers, Oil Weigh


NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks slid on Thursday after New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer accused insurance broker Marsh & McLennan Cos. (MMC.N: Quote , Profile , Research ) of fraud, and the fallout hit insurers, including American International Group (AIG.N: Quote , Profile , Research ) . Crude oil spiked to a fresh record just below $55 a barrel, which added to pressure on stocks. The Dow Jones industrial average ended down 106.41 points, or 1.06 percent, at 9,895.92, based on the latest available data. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index closed down 10.39 points, or 0.93 percent, at 1,103.26 The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index fell 17.51 points, or 0.91 percent, to finish at 1,903.02.
