Marine Insurance
Marine insurance is insurance that covers anything that is water-related, such as boat insurance or cargo insurance. People who own only a dinghy are as eligible for marine insurance as are persons who own a fleet of ships.
Maritime casualties are also covered by marine insurance. Whether these casualties are suffered by the policyholders, their employees, or others who are the liability of the policyholders, the lives and health of others are within the scope of marine insurance.
A big facet of marine insurance involves the repair of vessels or their salvage if they are wrecked or sunk. Marine insurance policies may provide for the removal of the wreckage, the retrieval of a sunk vessel, the salvage of spilled cargo, or the cleanup of a fuel spill that results from a maritime accident.
Marine insurance covers a multitude of contingencies. For example, a load of tires that was shipped from Singapore to Australia was found to be infested with a particular type of mosquito larvae. Marine insurance would cover the fumigation of those tires, together with any damage caused by the mosquito larvae as a result of their accidental import to Australia.
